Das Radio der Zukunft – diesen Titel trägt ein visionärer Essay des russischen Futuristen Velimir Chlebnikov aus dem Jahre 1921.

Chlebnikov: Das Radio der Zukunft – der wichtigste Baum der Erkenntnis - wird der Wissenschaft eine Fülle von Aufgaben eröffnen und die Menschheit zusammenführen. Neben der Radiohauptstation, diesem Schloss aus Eisen, um das Wolken aus Drähte wie Haare verstreut sind, werden wahrscheinlich ein Knochenpaar, ein Schädel und die bekannte Aufschrift: „Achtung!“ zu sehen sein, da die geringste Unterbrechung in der Arbeit des Radios die geistige Ohnmacht des ganzen Landes, den zeitweiligen Verlust seines Bewusstseins verursachen würde.

Monoblock Poemas y textos sin elocuencia ist die Wiederaufführung einer Performance, die

1971 von Juan José Gurrola (1935-2007) in Mexico City vorgestellt wurde.

Die Performance behandelt auf poetische Weise die Auffassung einer angestrebten imperialistischen Dominanz der U.S.A. gegenüber Mexiko.

Zugleich kritisiert sie den Kunstbetrieb und seine Mechanismen.

“Du kannst Dir das verflucht beste Auto bauen, das Du Dir wünscht, aaaaaaaber… wenn Du nicht den Motorblock hast, damit es fährt … 

nun, sie haben uns rein gelegt. Motorblöcke können nur von Gringos gebaut werden.”, erklärt Gurrola.

Monoblock Poemas y textos sin elocuencia is s a re-staging of a performance from 1971 made by Juan José Gurrola (1935-2007) in Mexico City.

It deals in a poetic way with the notion of imperialist domination attempts carried out by the U.S. upon Mexico. 

Simultaneously it criticises the world of fine arts and its mechanisms.

 “You can build yourselves the best damned car you want, buuuuuuuut... if you don’t have the Monoblock to make it run… 

well, they screwed us. Monoblocks are only produced by gringos”, Gurrola explains.

BLACK BIUTI feat. Grimm: Katrin Hauk und Steffi Neuhuber lernten sich 2009 in Oslo während des Projektes ÖNCZkekvist kennen. Von da an begannen sie gemeinsam Projekte zu entwickeln, wie auch die Formation Black Biuti. Einfache Akkordfolgen, minimalistische Bewegungen, noisige Sounds und sich lang entwickelnde Drones sind Ausgangspunkte ihrer Musik. Die beiden Musikerinnen sind offen fuer jeglichste Medien/Strukturen und verschließen sich nicht vor der Einbindung von Songs, freien Improvisationen oder performativen Elementen. Seit 2013 spielen sie regelmäßig mit dem Fagottisten Thomas Grimm zusammen.

Urkuma, Feedback Tamburin

Stefano “Urkuma” De Santis, born in the South-east part of Italy, began his artistic career as a playwright, and later developed a musical approach to translate his theatre concepts into sound. The word Urkuma is specific to the FinisTerrae part of Italy and expresses a state of mind, that is possible to compare with the opposite to the Buddhist concept of nirvana. 

Proceeding from free improvisation and noise, the music pairs together harshness and delicateness to piece together carefully spatialized sonic mosaics. Murmured drones, liquid growls, electrical discharges and acoustic touches: dissembling pieces are assembled into a unified whole.

He did releases, performances, symposiums and installations in Italy, Poland, Usa, Austria,UK, Spain, Portugal, Swiss, Slovack Rep., Japan and has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and sound composers.

3."MUSIC FOR PIECES OF WOOD"

... ist die solo-interpretation des gleichnamigen stückes von steve reich aus dem jahre 1973.

das stück ist ein percussion-werk für 5 spieler mit getuneten claves und dauert etwa 10 minuten.

steve reich (von dem ich nicht aufhören kann, fan zu sein) hat in einem interview zu diesem stück gesagt, daß er es (zusammen mit dem weitaus bekannterem "clapping music") während einer europa-tour erfunden hat, bei der sein ensemble zum teil sauschweres equipment transportieren mußte und er eine musik erfinden wollte, die seinen ästhetischen vorstellungen genügen aber gleichzeitig mit möglichst geringem materialaufwand funktionieren sollte.

diese idee habe ich nun fortgeführt, und werde mithilfe einer selbstgebastelten video-loopstation das stück partiturgetreu alleine realisieren.

d.h.: ich spiele alle parts vor laufender life-video-kamera und nehme mich dabei auf. die resultierenden patterns schichte ich im video (und im sound) übereinander bzw. nebeneinander. alles wird von mir gesteuert und auch performt.

JD Zazie & Billy Roisz, Turntable, Cdj, E-Bass, Elektronik

JD Zazie ist in Italien geboren, lebt aber seit
geraumer Zeit in Berlin und ist in der dortigen Musikszene als DJ,
Turntablistin und Klangkünstlerin aktiv. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Studio Urban Resonance, Mitglied des italienischen Labels Burb Enterprise und Co-Leiterin des Staalplaat Radios.
Mit ihrer Arbeit versucht sie eine Neudefinition von Begriffen wie
DJ und Elektro-Akustik. Als Solistin und als Mitglied in vielen Ensembles bewegt sie sich gerne auf „unsicherem“ Terrain. Ihre Werkzeuge (gleichzeitig ihre Instrumente) sind Turntables, Mischpult und CD-Js.

Billy Roisz beschäftigt sich seit Ende der 1990er Jahre intensiv mit den Medien Video & Sound. Der Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt im Experimentieren mit der Verknüpfung auditiver und visueller Reize. Es geht um Interaktion zwischen Ton und Bild, die Auswechselbarkeit bzw. Einheit des bild- und tonerzeugenden elektromagnetischen Signals in den generierenden Maschinen.
Die Umsetzung dieser Experimente erfolgt meist in Form von Live-Performances und audiovisuellen Installationen in enger Zusammenarbeit solo oder mit MusikerInnen aus dem Bereich experimenteller Elektronik und Noise, aber auch komponierter neuer und alter Musik, Tanz und Performance.

Erin Sexton, Elektrochemische A/V Performance

Erin Sexton is a Canadian artist who works in sound, performance and installation.

Based in Montreal, she builds electronics, grows crystals, amplifies architecture and

sonifies the æther.

/PHASE SPACE/
Between ritual and experiment, phase space is an audio/visual performance wherein I

try to create multi-dimensional resonance, embodying the different states of matter and

energy through sound. Physical processes are amplified, salt solutions mixed, and dry

ice sublimated. A network of tactile electronics is interfaced with the chemistry of

electrolysis, using the solutions as signal processors while transforming their molecular

structure. Each element is explored with microscope video, merged with stroboscopic

symmetries of the future crystals that will form.

Intervening minimally, I tune and combine simple analog audio circuits, which allows for

emergent sonic phenomena, immediate and raw. An array of sensors helps to create

complex feedback patterns, also involving my own body in the circuit. Fragile and

chaotic, I hope to accidentally create a metaphysical microphone, receiving

transmissions from the electromagnetic beyond. These ephemeral phenomena are

embedded within matter, their signals modifying the base structure of the salt solution,

which is then left to crystallize.

A work written by Dieb 13 and performed by Castelló (amplified subcontrabass paetzold recorder, electronics), Roisz (electronics), Stangl (electric guitar) and the composer (turntables, klopfer--unless that's a German soft drink, I'm confused; but image google paetzold recorders for some cool pictures).

I haven't been a huge fan of much of what I've heard from Dieb 13 in recent years, so I approached this release with some degree of caution, but I'm happy to report that it won me over completely. A piece composed along a timeline which also gives the players room for improvisation, the overall sound does indeed evoke the underwater world, particularly via the enormous recorder wielded by Castelló, Stangl's lovely if limited guitar chimes acting as glints seen up on the surface. The whole piece is very understated, various elements, including voices (some reciting numbers as in old East German coded radio transmissions) floating slowly through, glimpsed and then reabsorbed by the sea. There's even a fairly visceral depiction of air intake through a breathing tube, augmented by a hiss (other apparatus) and the odd ping (passing fauna). It's all quite coherent and deftly executed; whatever the parameters were, excellent choices seem to have been made by composer and performers alike, always leaving a thread, never overburdening it. It possesses that wonderful quality of staying in one place yet being endlessly, subtly different. A happy surprise for me, thoroughly absorbing, and one I highly recommend checking out.

The final new release is by a quartet of players, Angelica Castello (amplified subcontrabass, paetzold recorder and electronic devices, Billy Roisz (electronics), Burkhard Stangl (electric guitar) and Dieb13 (turntables & klopfer). They played together in concert on the 13th of December 2013 in Vienna and the only other thing the cover says it is ‘a timeline composition for 4 improvisers by Dieb13′. So, maybe, in some way there is a score/concept/idea behind this. The concert here is kept in one piece and it’s the most coherent one, perhaps also the one in which electronics play a bigger role, perhaps even on a 50-50 balance, or perhaps even more. It’s hard to say, but there is indeed some continuous sounds on this, which seems to be a rare thing on the world of improvisation. Of the three new releases on Mikroton this seems to be the one I am enjoying most. It’s intense, it’s quite dynamic, it’s balances nicely on the improvised and composed nature of the music, has extended parts in the world of electronics, but at the same time also is rich in acoustic sounds, with Stangl’s guitar playing when he seems necessary – which is not always. Some excellent interaction here.

A timeline composition for 4 improvisers by dieb13 steht auf der nett gemachten CD-Hülle diese Quartetts. Man hört einen knapp 42 Minuten langen, live in der Alten Schmiede in Wien aufgenommenen Track, der sich durch ein vielseitiges Leben schlängelt. Es zischt und röhrt, klackt und klickt. Kurze Sprach- und andere Samples bringen Leben, Gitarrenklänge aller Art Melodien ins Spiel. Die Subkontrabassflöte ist oft elektronisch verfremdet und mischt sich gut mit den Electronics. Inwieweit hier etwas komponiert ist, kann ich kaum heraushören. Manchmal erklingen relativ plötzlich Parts, die dann abrupt wieder enden. Auf jeden Fall spielen die Vier herrlich zusammen und haben große Ohren. Es herrscht eine hohe Transparenz, die auch durch die gute Aufnahme schön zur Geltung kommt. Im letzten Drittel wird es etwas droniger und fetter, um dann nach ein paar Gitarrensprengseln mit einem Zisch zu enden. Schöne Platte!
